Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner (OMD)
Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Moxibustion & Cupping

流水不腐,户枢不蠹

"Flowing water never goes bad; door hinges never gather termites"

"Flowing water never gets stagnant/polluted"

As a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I'm passionate about helping people improve their lives, helping them to improve their Mind, Body & Spirit in order to achieve or maintain increased Health, Vitality and Wellness, by teaching Tai Chi (Taiji Quan) and Qi Gong, Meditation, Health Nourishing & Breathing Exercises, as well as, for those interested, through the study of the Martial Arts, Self Defence & Personal Protection (including Women's Self Defence). And of course, through other Traditional Chinese Medicine modalities, such as Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Moxibustion & Cupping.

Tai Chi, or Taiji, is short for Tai Chi Chuan (Taiji Quan 太極拳) and is an ancient Chinese Martial Art, and Daoist (Taoist 道) Health Practice, that today is generally focused on it's health & healing aspects, and is practiced as an enjoyable & interesting health nourishing exercise & philosophy that helps you maintain good health, relaxation & vitality.

Qi Gong (氣功) are deep breathing, stretching and mobility Health Nourishing Exercises for ones Body, Mind and Spirit.

Meditation (Mingxiang 冥想) is a practice involving mental and physical techniques to deliberately focus ones attention and bring about feelings of calm, heightened energy and awareness, as well as improving brain health and overall well-being. Regular meditation offers many health benefits, such as reduced stress and anxiety.

The graceful movements of this Martial Art reflect a history of centuries of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) & Daoist (Taoist) Philosophy & Health Practices, which western science is also gradually catching up to, confirming & validating many aspects of ancient knowledge & wisdom each year.

The regular & consistent practice of Tai Chi (太極) & Qi Gong (氣功) has been shown to have many benefits to the physical & mental health and well being of people of all ages and fitness levels. It is particularly helpful for those wishing to improve mobility & balance, relieve stress or anxiety, strengthen the immune system and increase one's general health & vitality, as well as when recuperating from surgery, illness or injury.

In my role as a Practitioner (OMD) of Traditional Chinese and Oriental Medicine, I've found Tai Chi to be very beneficial for a wide range of ailments, including, as mentioned, stress, anxiety, hypertension, weak immune system and pain management, for example. Further, Tai Chi (Taiji Quan) and Qi Ging (Chi Kung) are forms of preventative medicine.

As well as healing or managing various forms of illness & disease, it can also assist or support western medical treatment as a form of Complimentary Medicine (CAM), often in the manner of managing the side effects of those treatments, and thus help one to endure the sometimes harsh, yet benefical, pharmaceutical drug, surgical, or other treatment regimes, required, for such illnesses.

Of course, Tai Chi is a Martial Art, and at Summer Hill Tai Chi one can also study the Martial Art side of Tai Chi. Infact studying the whole Art, including the Martial side, holistically will provide superior health and healing benefits than strictly focusing only on the Health side alone.

As well as Lessons & Classes, Summer Hill Tai Chi Club also provides a weekly: Free Community Tai Chi Hour - "GongGong Tai Chi (公共太極)" , to support the people of Summer Hill and surrounding Communities in their health goals.

About Tai Chi (for Health)

What is Tai Chi / Tai Chi Chuan (Taiji Quan) 太極拳

Very simplistically, Tai Chi or Tai Chi Chuan (Taiji Quan 太極拳) is a Chinese Martial Art that for many today is generally focused on it's health & healing aspects, and is practiced as an enjoyable health nourishing exercise that helps you maintain good health, relaxation & vitality. There are both solo, partner and weapons practices. The graceful movements of this Martial Art reflect a history of centuries of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) & Daoist (Taoist) Philosophy, which western science is also gradually confirming & validating.

The regular practice of Tai Chi has been shown to have many benefits to the health and well being of people of all ages and fitness levels. It is particularly helpful for those wishing to improve mobility & balance, relieve stress, strengthen the immune system increase one's health & vitality, as well as recuperating from illness or injury.

Tai Chi Chuan (太極拳) is simply an older way of romanising the Chinese word 'Taiji Quan' (太極拳) into English. The same as we once romanised (& pronounced) the Capital of China as "Peking" (北京), and nowadays we use "Beijing" (北京). You can see the Chinese Characters are the same.

Tai Chi / Taiji is simply an abbreviated form of the full name Tai Chi Chuan / Taiji Quan

Tai Chi includes the practice of Qi Gong (see below)

Regarding Yin- Yang philosophy: It often expressed that Tai Chi is the Yang aspect and Qi Gong is the Yin aspect

What is Qi Gong / Ch Kung 氣功

Again very simplistically, Qi Gong (氣功),or Qigong/Chi Kung, are forms of Deep Breathing Health Nourishing Exercises. They involve aspects of stillness, movement, stretching, flexing/tensing, combined with deep abdominal breathing. For convenience, Meditation Practices can also be included under this term.

Benefits of Qi Gong are increasingly recognized worldwide and within scientific community. Qigong benefits range from mind relaxation and sharpening, stress relief to increased energy, vitality and helping to heal degenerative and chronic diseases.

Qigong exercises integrate body postures, movement, breathing and meditation for a healthy life, spiritual advancement and/or martial arts training.

It is a 5,000-year-old Chinese healthcare modality that has endured the test of time.

Qi Gong can be practiced as a stand alone Art, however it is very often practiced together with Tai Chi, and infact Tai Chi includes Qi Gong within it's practice.

Regarding Yin- Yang philosophy: It often expressed that Tai Chi is the Yang aspect and Qi Gong is the Yin aspect

I fix 'Broken Tai Chi' ... before it breaks you! Incorrect or poorly taught Tai Chi, such as locking out the elbow or knee joints, bad alignment of the hip or knee joints, or other incorrect alignments, structure, methods and so on will not only limit/negate potential health benefits, but can in fact cause injury/damage to the body, particularly over a long period of time. Tai Chi is well known for Strengthening the Knees, for example, and improving one's Health & Vitality, however incorrectly taught it can damage the knees & health!

Further, for Martial Art purposes, incorrect alignment, structure, posture, methods & so on will serve little practical use, and rather benefit your opponent.

I really appreciate the actual hands on personal instruction afforded by the small classes, rather than simply an instructor at the front, leading a large class, simply following along.

The detailed instruction, depth of knowledge and corrections of posture, biomechanics and so on make all the difference.

I wish I'd found Summer Hill Tai Chi 6 years ago, when I first started!

    Kevin

If you're interested in a deeper practice of Taiji Quan & Qi Gong, then I strongly recommend Summer Hill Tai Chi School.

I also practice Escrima (FMA, Arnis) and Mauy Thai with this Teacher and strongly recommend both: Summer Hill Tai Chi and Summer Hill Martial Arts & Self Defence.

As he says "nothing fancy", just real study and practice of these Martial Arts.

    Penny

The Teacher is very patient and caring, with a deep understanding of not only Martial Arts, but also health and healing as he is also a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner.

The practice of Tai Chi and Qi Gong has greatly increased my health and wellness in general, and improved several of my health problems.

I also find the meditation relaxing.

I recommend Summer Hill Tai Chi.

    Mihoko

Originally I was receiving Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine treatments from the Teacher, when I discovered he also taught Taiji Quan (Tai Chi) and Qi Gong

Being aware of Tai Chi's health benefits I joined his Summer Hill Tai Chi School and have found it extremely beneficial in managing my stress and anxiety, as well as my general health & well being.

With small class sizes and personalised instruction I can't recommend it enough!

I also strongly recommend for Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine!

    Samira

As a Karate practitioner, besides increased health and well being, I've also found the study of Tai Chi & Qi Gong at Summer Hill Tai Chi to have profoundly improved my Karate, and the Martial Art side of Tai Chi to be a complementary Art to Karate.

You can learn all aspects of both the Health and Martial sides of Taiji Quan (Tai Chi) here and I strongly recommend this School.

While not a big or fancy school, and limited to just a few students each of the lessons, you'll find what is taught in those lessons to be practical and valuable for Health, Martial Arts, and indeed Life!

    Peter

Taiji Quan, or Tai Chi, and Qi Gong has helped to lower my high blood pressure over the year, and I find practicing in the fresh air at the beautiful park very relaxing.

My balance and coordination have also improved tremendously.

I also find the meditations and philosophy both interesting and applicable to daily life stresses.

The teacher is very kind and has a lot of experience to adapt the exercises to each person. I really like the small lessons and detailed teaching.

I recommend you try out Summer Hill Tai Chi & Qi Gong.

    Free Community Tai Chi hour

I was so happy to discover Summer Hill Tai Chi offering a Free Community Tai Chi hour, as I am currently unable to afford attending classes anywhere or find any free Tai Chi close to me until now.

This is a great and caring service for the Summer Hill Community which has helped both my mental and physical health and well being greatly! I Can't thank Summer Hill Tai Chi enough for this.

This free Community Tai Chi hour depends on having at least several participants, so I am very happy to assist in promoting this free Tai Chi follow along session

The park location along with all the big beautiful trees helps one relax and enjoy some Tai Chi, Qi Gong and exercise in a small group setting.

I really appreciate the Teachers time and kindness. Thank You!

    John

Summer Hill Tai Chi's Free Community Tai Chi is amazing!

This is a Tai Chi and Qi Gong follow along practice offered for free or by small donation.

Following along with the movements in the beautiful park and fresh air is very relaxing and energising and I hope more people hear about this and can attend as it's so nice to exericse in a group after all the isolation of Covid.

I really love it and find it such a mid week stress reliever! It has also really helped relieve my lower back pain, manage stress much better, and help relieve tension from my Univeristy studies.

I really thank the Teacher for his donating his time and effort to do this for us.

I recommend Summer Hill Tai Chi very much!
